Greg Young

Independent Director and Chair

Greg brings to the role of Chair extensive experience in telecommunications, having spent the past decade in global telecom positions. Most recently Greg served for 3 years as CEO of Ooredoo Oman, one of the largest companies on the Oman stock exchange with some $1 billion in annual revenues from mobile, fixed and international telecommunications services.  While there he led a dramatic uplift in share price, market share, revenue and profit.  This was Greg’s second global CEO position having spent four years leading a turnaround at Sri Lanka Telecom. Prior to this he served in Telecom engineering roles as Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm headquartered in San Diego, USA, and as Chief Technology Officer for the Indian CDMA operator Tata Teleservices, overseeing explosive subscriber growth in a Pan-Indian network. His earlier telecommunications career in Australia spanned technical and commercial roles with Telstra, Phillips and Ericsson.

Rachel Bauer

Independent Director

Rachel is the Chief Operations Officer at Like a Photon with extensive Operational, IT, Finance and Marketing management experience gained through such roles as managing a retail bank branch as co-franchisee, senior marketing manager and as an executive/IT management consultant. Rachel has wide-ranging business technology experience, including a Bachelor of Information Technology (with Distinction), a certification in Blockchain for Business and from her role as Managing Director of ePowermac (an e-commerce store retailing digital storage systems). Rachel is also a member of the Australian Computer Society and a board member of Start-Up Gladstone, a not for profit organisation aiming to support individuals with ideas, start-ups and micro-businesses to grow successful businesses.

Jane Seawright

Independent Director

Jane is an experienced lawyer, marketing professional and non-executive director with wide experience across the sport, health, innovation and arts sectors. Jane was previously chair of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Trust and a board member of the Residential Tenancies Authority. She has held roles as company secretary and general counsel at CRCMining and Northern Australia Primary Health Limited, is Netball Queensland chair, and is a board member of Racing Queensland and The Australian Festival of Chamber Music.

Jane Nant

Member Director, Energy Queensland

Jane joined Energy Queensland in May 2017 as Company Secretary.  She has over 12 years’ senior leadership experience in the utilities industry, including executive and General Counsel roles. Jane is a qualified lawyer and chartered company secretary. Jane currently sits on the management boards of Energy Queensland subsidiaries including Energex Limited, Ergon Energy Corporation Limited, Ergon Energy Queensland Pty Ltd, Yurika Pty Ltd and Metering Dynamics Pty Ltd.

Kevin Kehl

Member Director, Powerlink

Kevin has more than 30 years’ experience in the energy industry across the distribution and transmission networks sector. Kevin is an experienced senior executive currently leading Powerlink’s strategy, business planning, network regulation, business development, customer management, network portfolio and business resilience functions. Kevin will be the acting Chief Executive of Powerlink following the resignation of Ms Merryn York in August this year.


Executive Team

Derek Merdith

Chief Executive Officer

Derek has enjoyed three decades in IT & Telecommunications industries, with experience across fibre, wireless and satellite telecommunications technologies.

Most recently Derek was Queensland State Manager at TPG Telecom, the owner of AAPT, iiNet and Pipe Networks. Over his 7 years as State Manager he drove the Queensland strategy for TPG’s direct Business, Enterprise and Government Teams, and through AAPT, he was responsible for the partner channel (indirect) strategies across the Wholesale, Alliance and Dealer teams.

A passionate technology entrepreneur, Derek has been actively involved in a range of technology start-ups both directly and on an advisory level, and has worked with the AusIndusty COMET (Commercialising Emerging Technology) program, and as a Mentor with the Queensland Government’s Mentor for Growth program.

Derek holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) from University of New South Wales, an MBA and Master of Commerce (Hons) from Bond University as well as having completed the Owner President Manager (OPM) program at Harvard Business School, and has held the role of Lecturer at Bond University, teaching at both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate streams of Entrepreneurship, Venture Capital Finance, Business Planning & Strategy.


Jason Horan

Technical Director

Jason joins QCN Fibre with over 10 years experience in telecommunications – specialising in design, planning, strategy and asset management within a critical infrastructure environment.

Jason was previously responsible for the asset lifecycle management of telecommunication and secondary system assets at Powerlink Queensland. Prior to that, he led design teams in the specification, design and augmentation of DWDM and SDH networks spanning more than 4000km throughout Queensland.

At QCN Fibre, Jason is responsible for the development and operationalising our technical strategy to maximise opportunities for regional communities and businesses – delivering viable, next generation transmission products for our wholesale customers.

Anne Wilson

Corporate services manager

Anne has enjoyed over 20 years’ experience working in Government and Government Owned Corporations driving the development of strategic policy and leading national reform programs.

Anne’s most recent experience with the Office of the Queensland Chief Entrepreneur involved facilitating the establishment and growth of Queensland’s startup community by connecting them with investors, international corporations and government programs; delivering educational programs; and showcasing them nationally and internationally.

At QCN Fibre, Anne manages the corporate service requirements of the office including the provision of finance, HR, marketing, Industrial Relations, government relations, and Board interaction.
