Board of Directors

Greg Young

Independent Director and Chair

Greg brings to the role of Chair extensive experience in telecommunications, having spent the past decade in global telecom positions. Most recently Greg served for 3 years as CEO of Ooredoo Oman, one of the largest companies on the Oman stock exchange with some $1 billion in annual revenues from mobile, fixed and international telecommunications services.  While there he led a dramatic uplift in share price, market share, revenue and profit.  This was Greg’s second global CEO position having spent four years leading a turnaround at Sri Lanka Telecom. Prior to this he served in Telecom engineering roles as Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm headquartered in San Diego, USA, and as Chief Technology Officer for the Indian CDMA operator Tata Teleservices, overseeing explosive subscriber growth in a Pan-Indian network. His earlier telecommunications career in Australia spanned technical and commercial roles with Telstra, Phillips and Ericsson. Greg is a proud member of the Sunshine Coast community.

Rachel Bauer

Independent Director

Rachel is the Chief Operations Officer at Like a Photon with extensive Operational, IT, Finance and Marketing management experience gained through such roles as managing a retail bank branch as co-franchisee, senior marketing manager and as an executive/IT management consultant. Rachel has wide-ranging business technology experience, including a Bachelor of Information Technology (with Distinction), a certification in Blockchain for Business and from her role as Managing Director of ePowermac (an e-commerce store retailing digital storage systems). Rachel is also a member of the Australian Computer Society and a board member of Start-Up Gladstone, a not for profit organisation aiming to support individuals with ideas, start-ups and micro-businesses to grow successful businesses.

Jane Seawright

Independent Director

Jane is an experienced lawyer, marketing professional and non-executive director with wide experience across the sport, health, innovation and arts sectors. Jane was previously chair of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research Trust and a board member of the Residential Tenancies Authority. She has held roles as company secretary and general counsel at CRCMining and Northern Australia Primary Health Limited, is Netball Queensland chair, and is a board member of Racing Queensland and The Australian Festival of Chamber Music. Jane is a proud Townsville resident.

Jane Nant

Member Director, Energy Queensland

Jane joined Energy Queensland in May 2017 as Company Secretary.  She has over 12 years’ senior leadership experience in the utilities industry, including executive and General Counsel roles. Jane is a qualified lawyer and chartered company secretary. Jane is based in Townsville and currently sits on the management boards of Energy Queensland subsidiaries including Energex Limited, Ergon Energy Corporation Limited, Ergon Energy Queensland Pty Ltd, Yurika Pty Ltd and Metering Dynamics Pty Ltd.  Jane is also a member of the AICD Townsville Regional Committee and lives in Townsville.

Kevin Kehl

Member Director, Powerlink

Kevin has more than 30 years’ experience in the energy industry across the distribution and transmission networks sector. Kevin is an experienced senior executive currently leading Powerlink’s strategy, business resilience and strategic planning functions. Kevin comes from a long and proud line of cane farmers from Ingham.

Derek Merdith

Chief Executive Officer

CEO of the new entity QCN Fibre, Derek Merdith and his team are driving innovation throughout Queensland communities. Through delivering real solutions of improved telecommunications Coverage, Capacity and Competition, QCN Fibre will enable Queenslanders to take advantage of their exceptional opportunities in the emerging economy.

Derek has worked in the Internet Technology and Telecommunications industry for more than 30 years. During his career, he has seen new technologies develop, brought them to market and then introduced the next generation of technology when it was ready to bring value to his clients.

Derek managed TPG for Queensland, where he and his team developed and delivered the organisation’s strategy to business, enterprise and government clients and established a market leading integrated partner channel strategy.

A perennial entrepreneur, Derek has been involved in a number of start-ups including working with the AusIndustry Commercialising Emerging Technology program. He has mentored business leaders with the Queensland Government’s Mentor for Growth Program

His deep curiosity combined with a fiercely creative and competitive streak inspires those around him to explore. His innate humour and engaging nature have enabled him to create a unique style of leadership –where people feel heard and appreciated, while striving to innovate. He pragmatically drives for progress not perfection.

Derek’s fundamental belief is that people create change through curiosity, creativity, and perspective. His personal goal is to break down the penalty of distance in Queensland by enabling metropolitan grade telecommunications services to Queensland regional communities.

Derek holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of New South Wales and an MBA and Master of Commerce (Hons) from Bond University. He has completed the Owner President Manager (OPM) program at Harvard Business School and has been a Lecturer in Undergraduate and Postgraduate streams of Entrepreneurship, Venture Capital Finance, Business Planning & Strategy at Bond University.

 

Jason Horan

Technical Director

Technical Director, Jason Horan is part of the leadership team of the new entity QCN Fibre. Alongside CEO Derek Merdith, Jason and the team are driving innovation throughout Queensland communities. Through delivering real solutions of improved telecommunications Coverage, Capacity and Competition, QCN Fibre will enable Queenslanders to take advantage of their exceptional opportunities in the emerging economy.

For the past ten years, Jason has worked in the telecommunications industry, specialising in strategic design within critical infrastructure environments. He focuses on developing optimised solutions for his customers and stakeholders. He has deep experience in engineering high availability optical fibre communication systems, including DWDM, OTN, CE, SDH, PDH.

Jason moved to QCN Fibre from our partner Powerlink Queensland.  At Powerlink, Jason was responsible for the asset lifecycle management of telecommunications infrastructure and supporting systems. He led design teams in the development of advanced telecommunications networks spanning more than 4,000 kms throughout Queensland.

Jason’s love of learning combines with an insatiable curiosity in how things work that inspires others to seek his insight and guidance. Jason is that rare technologist who can explain the most complex concept in the most relatable fashion.

At QCN Fibre, Jason is responsible for the development and delivery of our technical strategy to maximise opportunities for Queensland’s regional communities and businesses.

Anne Wilson

Corporate services manager

Corporate Services Manager, Anne Wilson is part of the leadership team of the new entity QCN Fibre. Alongside CEO Derek Merdith, Anne and the team are driving innovation throughout Queensland communities. Through delivering real solutions of improved telecommunications Coverage, Capacity and Competition, QCN Fibre will enable Queenslanders to take advantage of their exceptional opportunities in the emerging economy.

Anne has over 20 years’ experience working in and with Government and Government Owned Corporations. Her deep-seated love of learning has driven her to build a career across multiple departments and industry sectors. She has extensive experience managing programs, projects, policy, and industry development initiatives. Anne designs, implements, and manages governance structures, process, and relationship management frameworks to ensure success.

Her most recent experience was with the Office of the Queensland Chief Entrepreneur where she was involved in establishing and growing Queensland’s start-up community. Her work incorporated connecting Queensland’s start-up community with key stakeholders including investors, international corporations and government sponsored programs. Anne and her team delivered cross industry educational programs and showcased member organisations both nationally and internationally.

At QCN Fibre, Anne manages all corporate services including Finance, Human Resource Management and Development, Marketing, Industrial Relations, Government Relations and Board liaison.

Anne Wilson’s word is her bond. Adept at working across broad communities of stakeholders, Anne has always focused on providing calm insight, considered judgement and an honest perspective.

Andrew Walpole

Engagement Director, Andrew Walpole is part of the leadership team of the new entity QCN Fibre. Alongside CEO Derek Merdith, Andrew and the team are driving innovation throughout Queensland communities. Through delivering real solutions of improved telecommunications Coverage, Capacity and Competition, QCN Fibre will enable Queenslanders to take advantage of their exceptional opportunities in the emerging economy.

Andrew has more than 25 years’ experience in the Information Technology and Telecommunications industry servicing a broad range of clients and communities. His knowledge spans all technologies including mobile, satellite, ROIP and enterprise-based services. He has run contact centres and supported key government and enterprise clients.

As Engagement Director at QCN Fibre, Andrew’s role is to create and develop long-term relationships with every client and community that QCN works with. He works within these communities to develop the best commercial and technical solutions to support the diverse needs of Queensland’s regional communities and businesses.

Andrew connects naturally with others, seeking their perspective and looking to help in any way that he can. He is driven to understand others’ needs and persevere to a solution. His method involves a unique combination of astute judgement and an innovative creativity born of his working in the telecommunications and ICT industries.
